OKX Demo Trading (2026)
You get 20% of your trading fees back with this code; the site owner earns a commission at no extra cost to you. Not for residents of restricted regions (incl. U.S., Canada). Rewards vary by region and are not guaranteed. Independent guide, not an official OKX site.
Short answer: OKX demo trading is a free simulated environment with virtual funds where you can practise spot, margin, futures and options without risking real money. Open it from the Trade menu, trade as normal, and reset your balance when you want a fresh start. It's the safest way to learn the interface, order types and your own bot or API code. It won't teach you how you'll behave with real money, and demo fills and prices aren't a reliable guide to live results.

How to start OKX demo trading
- Log in to your OKX account. Demo trading is part of it, so you need an account first. See how to sign up for OKX if you don't have one.
- On the web, hover over Trade and choose Demo trading. In the app, open the menu or User Center and tap Demo trading.
- Pick a market. For spot, choose a pair such as BTC/USDT. For futures, open the pair selector and choose a perpetual such as BTCUSDT.
- Place an order the way you would live: choose limit or market, set the size, then buy or sell. For futures, Buy to open long or Sell to open short.
- Watch your positions and balance in Assets. To start over, cancel all orders, close all positions, then use Reset.
- To go back, use Exit (app) or Switch to live trading (web).
What demo teaches well, and what it doesn't
| Demo is good for | Demo can't teach you |
|---|---|
| Finding order types, the order book and the layout | How you feel and act when real money is on the line |
| Practising placing, cancelling and sizing orders without a costly typo | Real liquidity and slippage: simulated fills don't move a real order book |
| Seeing how margin, liquidation and funding behave | Whether OKX's live fees, limits and availability match what you assumed |
| Testing your own rules and your bot or API script safely | Whether a strategy works: a short winning streak can be luck |
One caution from OKX's own pages: they say demo and live are separate and that market data can't be used as a reference between them, and they aren't consistent about how closely demo prices follow the live market. Don't treat demo prices as a signal.
Worked example: why you should still count fees
Illustrative numbers only, not OKX's fee schedule and not a forecast. Suppose you trade a $500 position and assume a 0.1% fee on each side, so about $1.00 for a round trip (0.2%). If you do 20 round trips a month, that is about $20 in fees, or 4% of the $500 before any price move. A strategy that "makes 3% a month" in a demo that ignores or understates fees would lose money here.
So when you practise, include fees in your notes, using the rates shown in your own live account. Our OKX fees guide and the fee calculator help you estimate them, including the 20% rebate with code 33746534 on trading fees.
Using demo trading with the OKX API
If you write bots or scripts, demo is where they should run first. According to OKX's API documentation:
- Create a Demo Trading API key from the Demo Trading area (Personal Center, Demo Trading API). It is separate from your live keys.
- Send the header
x-simulated-trading: 1on every demo request. Without it, the request isn’t treated as a demo request. - Some functions aren't supported in demo, such as withdrawals and deposits.
- OKX documents three permission levels for live keys: read, trade and withdraw. Read lets you view account data, trade lets you place and cancel orders, and withdraw lets you move funds out.
How people lose money after demo
- Jumping to live with big size. Demo "profits" of a few days tempt people to start live with far more than they can afford to lose.
- Leverage. Futures magnify losses too, and liquidation is real. Demo hides what a liquidation feels like. Derivatives aren't available in every country, including some places such as the UK and Australia (retail).
- Ignoring fees and slippage. See the example above.
- Overfitting. Tuning a strategy until it looks perfect on a few weeks of demo results, then finding it fails on new conditions.
- Mode mix-ups. Running a script against live by forgetting the demo header or key.
A safer way to move from demo to live
These are our suggestions, not OKX rules:
- Write your rules down before you trade: what you trade, how much you risk per trade, and when you stop.
- Practise for long enough to see more than one kind of market, not just a lucky week.
- Track fees and every trade in a simple log, including the ones you regret.
- Go live with an amount you could lose completely, and keep leverage off while you learn.
- For bots and scripts, review demo orders one by one, then go live with a read-only key first, then trade permission, never withdraw.
What's not guaranteed
- Demo results predicting live results. They don't.
- Availability. Demo features, balances and product availability can differ by region and can change.
- Profit from any strategy. Crypto is volatile and you can lose some or all of your capital. Past results, demo or live, don't predict future ones.

FAQ
What is OKX demo trading?
A simulated environment with virtual funds where you can practise spot, margin, futures and options trading. OKX says trades in demo mode have no impact on your real assets.
Is OKX demo trading free?
Yes, there is no charge and no tiers: OKX says every user gets the same full demo access. You need an OKX account to log in to it.
How much virtual money do I get on OKX demo trading?
OKX gives you a predefined amount but doesn't state the figure on the help pages we checked, so check it in your own demo account. You can reset your balance after closing all positions and pending orders.
How do I switch between demo and live on OKX?
Open Demo trading from the Trade menu (web) or User Center / Menu (app). To go back, use Exit or Switch to live trading. Check the mode label before every order, since demo and live look similar.
Can I use the OKX API in demo trading?
Yes. You can create a separate Demo Trading API key and must send the header x-simulated-trading: 1 on every demo request. OKX notes that some functions, such as withdrawals and deposits, aren't supported in demo.
Are demo prices and fills the same as live trading?
Not reliably. OKX says demo and live modes are separate and that market data can't be used as a reference across them, and its pages are not consistent about how real demo prices are. Simulated fills also don't face the real order book, so slippage and liquidity can be very different live.
Does profit in OKX demo trading mean I'll profit live?
No. Demo results ignore real-money emotions, real liquidity and the cost of mistakes, and a short winning streak can be luck. Treat demo as a place to learn the tools and test your rules, not as proof a strategy works.
Can I practise a trading bot or API script in demo first?
Yes, that is one of its best uses. Test your script against the demo environment with a demo key, then review every order it placed before you ever connect a live key. Even then, start small.
